Have you ever sensed a gap between your current reality and your ideal self?
That’s your gut instinct speaking. Or what I like to call your value-o-meter.
Your what?
Let me explain, friend.
– Lazolia
Your value-o-meter is your internal compass used to measure or assess how aligned your actions, decisions and/or lifestyle are with your core values.
In other words, how well your choices are in harmony with your deeply held beliefs and principles.
For example, if you say you value “family“, but you’re working an 80-hour high-pressure job and out of the country two weeks out of the month every month, can you really say your actions (overworking) are in alignment with your wish to spend more time with your family?
Here’s another example:
If you say you value “health” but you eat junk food 5 times a week, don’t gym or drink 2l of water a day, can you really say that you value your health? Are you living in a way that shows that being healthy is important to you, that it’s a lifestyle and not just a fad?
As you can see, living a way that aligns with your values is no small task but it’s worth it. It affects everything you say and do. So much so it becomes your identity. Who doesn’t want to be known for being:
“honest”
“kind”
“compassionate”
“brave”
“zesty”
“ambitious”
“zealous”
“antifragile”
“confident”
“intentional”
“relentless”
“purposeful” and the list goes on and on and on.
How do you figure out your values so you can live by them?
I’ve got you.
Try the following exercise today or any time this week:
- Make a note of 3-5 values to start and no more than 10.
- Write down what each value means to you personally. There are no wrong answers. Don’t overthink it.
- Rate its importance in your life on a scale of 1 to 5.
- Daily or weekly, rate how well your actions align with each value on a scale of 1-10.
- Make notes about the actions or experiences you have related to each value.
- Review your values often, be it weekly, bi-weekly or monthly, and adjust actions or goals to better align with your values.
