Sindisiwe had always struggled with her hair and hairline. It was so bad many people were not even sure if she had hair in the first place since they always saw her with a trendy bob or wavy curls. The nail in the coffin was when one of the neighbour’s children, whom she was very fond of, asked loudly in front of the neighbours if she had prayed to God to give her hair so she wouldn’t have to keep hiding it under doll hair.
“When I tell you I cried, I mean it,” she recalls with a laugh. “It was the most embarrassing moment of my life but probably the most truthful.”

The Challenge
Sindisiwe had long suffered from thin, brittle hair. She had been relaxing it since the tender age of 10. Her mother didn’t know what to do with her very coarse 4C hair and had quickly thanked the gods for the Dark and Lovely relaxer that was all the rave at the time.
Sindisiwe didn’t mind because for once combing her hair wasn’t a nightmare and she could hold her hair in a ponytail. However, the thrill of pony-tying hair disappeared with the onset of puberty and then varsity. She over-manipulated her hair.
“My hair was forever in too-tight braids or neck-breaking weaves. I never gave my hair a break.”

The Solution
