We can live our best life by the choices we make

Reflective Exercise: Mapping Your Values

We’re on to the third part of the Value Guide Exploration Series. High five!

In case you missed the posts before, here they are:

Welcome
Introduction to Values
Identify Your Core Values

Today, we’re looking at mapping our values. This means deep self-reflection on the chosen 3-5 core values you identified in the previous exercise. You’ll look at some prompts to help you understand why the values are important to you, how living or not living in alignment can affect your life and how well you’re doing that already.

This exercise encourages introspection and contemplation to delve deeper into your core values.

What You’ll Need:
  • 10 – 20 minutes of uninterrupted time (the more the merrier!)
  • pen and paper/ notepad on your phone

Value Exploration

Take a moment to revisit the core values you identified in the previous exercise. Reflect on each value individually using the following prompts:

Value Name:

Write down the name of a core value you’ve identified (e.g., “Authenticity”).

Thoughtful Reflections:

What does this value mean to you personally?

How does this value manifest in your daily life or decisions?

Can you recall a specific instance where you honoured or acted in alignment with this value?

Impact Assessment:

Consider the impact of living in alignment with this value and the consequences of neglecting or disregarding it.

Contemplative Questions:

  • How does honouring this value contribute to your sense of fulfilment?
  • What challenges arise when this value is compromised or neglected?
  • How does living by this value affect your relationships, career, or personal growth?

Alignment Check:

Evaluate your current alignment with this value.

Self-Reflection:

  • On a scale of 1 to 10, how aligned do you feel with this value in your life currently?
  • What actions or changes can you implement to further align with this value?
  • Are there areas where you can enhance your commitment to this value?

Take your time to contemplate each value, allowing yourself to explore the nuances and significance of these guiding principles in your life.

This is probably the most important part of this series because now you’re beginning to see how important values are and identifying how living in alignment (or not) with them will help you live a happier, more fulfilled life.

Takeaway

Self-reflection is a powerful tool for gaining clarity and insight into your values.

Use these prompts as a guide to deepen your understanding of each core value and how it shapes your thoughts and actions. Enjoy the process and embrace this journey of introspection as you strive for greater alignment with what truly matters to you.

In the next part of the guide, we’ll look at how you can assess your current alignment with the values you identified. See you in the next one!
